So first of all I ‘m very excited with the launch of the website. Halcyon Pictures has done a phenomenal job for me. I feel like thank you is not enough for all your recommendations and hard work.
If you are new to this website and to the clinic – WELCOME!
The website has been put together by following the recommendations and requests of many patients.
Now on to the first subject of the month:
Cough Medicines!!
There has been much concern over this subject the last few weeks. My feeling on this is that this is a fantastic demonstration of how our health care system can change when there is enough demand from the public. A cough can be due to many reasons and it is a wonderful reflex that our body has developed to clear our lungs and respiratory tract. So why do we insist on suppressing this symptom? I think that when it has been going on for a few days it can be worrisome especially to parents of very young infants/children. Therefore it is almost a normal reaction to want to take away this ‘discomfort’. However, when we are simply taking away a symptom, we are not aware of what the underlying cause is. It sometimes could be an intolerance reaction to the food that we eat (especially something like dairy), an allergic reaction to something in our environment or an infection (the most frequent cause). Whatever the cause is, it is important to monitor: 1. What time of day the cough is worse? 2. If there is sputum (phlegm) coming up – what colour is it? 3. How long has it been going on for? 4. What other symptoms are there? And of course if there is a fever accompanying the cough then make sure that you see your doctor to rule out a serious infection, bronchitis or pneumonia.
I think that this is all for now, until next time stay well and if you would like to e-mail your recommendations or questions for the next entry I would be happy to hear from you.
Yours in health,
Ana
